EKTT Meet 2/1-11-2018/ West Liberty, KY
29 Players Attend; Dr. J Returns; Kyle Howard wins Junior Championship

Highest Attendance since 1998’s November to Remember!
What a night of table tennis! Not since EKTT’s November to Remember event of 1998, attendance 37, has EKTT had a bigger turnout. At Meet 2 of 2018, 29 players gathered to compete and enjoy the Olympic sport of table tennis. We are on an amazing roll right now!
The story of the night that will have implications on the league into the future was the return of Hall of Famer, 22-time Eastern Kentucky Singles Champion, 84-time Eastern Kentucky Doubles Champion, 1995 Eastern Kentucky Classic Winner, 23-time Inter-County Champion, 3-time Regional Champion, #2 in the Eastern Kentucky 100 All-Time Player Rankings, and former King of the Table Tournament winner “Dr. J” Johnny Johnson. His surprise appearance comes after months of speculation, and his arrival was nothing short of phenomenal! “It’s just great to be back. It brings back so many great memories. I’ll never forget it. I’m ready to play table tennis!”
Johnny last played in EKTT during 2013. A lot of dream matches to be had with his return are possible: “The Legend” Byron Risner (arguably the best, or at least one of the top 2 or 3 rivalries in EKTT history; “The Punisher” Junior Gullett, another Hall of Famer, and former partner of Dr. J; Donnie Pack, a famous West Liberty area player, that played against Dr. J when they were in high school. Langley Franklin, a future Hall of Famer, that has another long-lasting rivalry with the Doc. Welcome back Dr. J, one of the players who built the house known as EKTT.
We have started the year off with a new format, that harkens back to the first 16 years of the league, a system implemented by former EKTT Board Chair and President O.J. Crase. Players are matched up by rankings, according to ability, and if he/she beats a higher ranked player, he/she takes that players place in the rankings! One USATT league and EKTT sanctioned match will occur in a best of 7 format (unless otherwise stipulated for the event). Each doubles team will also play one official match in a best of 7 format as well. Then, the leaving is left open for players to play “unofficial” matches, practice, or receive coaching. The Junior Division will now be on a format which will feature a singles double elimination tournament, and a doubles double elimination tournament on rotating weekly basis. We have
There were 19 doubles and singles matches played at EKTT Meet 2. Special thanks to League Manager Gabe Bailey for his help. Gabe has earned this position, and we are glad to have him back in EKTT!
Keep in mind that some divisions cross-over with open divisions, such as the Senior and Junior Divisions. The Eastern Kentucky Championship, Inter-County Title, and Regional Titles are all “open,” meaning that any player is eligible for them, from any division if they choose to play for them (except for the Regional Title, which is for players rated under 1200 USATT League).
Here are the results from EKTT Meet 2, 2018:
Kyle Howard defeated Eastern Kentucky Junior Singles Champion Mack Parsons to win his first Junior Championship. Mack played well, and has the right to call for a rematch with Kyle within 6 weeks, or when the two are available at the same meet.
Two outstanding young athletes that represent our organization in the best possible way. Congratulations to Kyle on the big win! Mack is now rated #1 in the Junior contender rankings (the champion is listed above the contenders for any title).
Eastern Kentucky Singles Champion “The Legend” Byron Risner defeated Inter-County Champion Josh Frisby in a non-title match. “Josh played great in the first two games, and landed some strong loops. He’s an attacking offensive player.” Josh said he felt like he needs “to work on his backhand.” Table tennis is like all other sports: it’s a work in progress. Risner’s winning streak has now built to 26 straight. You can bet many players would love to end not only streak, but to also take the top title in the land.
Larry Salyer and Langley Franklin won over Gabe Bailey and Josh Frisby in doubles battle that went to the sixth game. Langley and Larry took the last two games of the series.
In Junior doubles play, John Ward and Kyle Howard defeated Mason Ward and Mack Parsons. Look for both these teams to be top seeds in the upcoming Junior Doubles Championship tournament. Gonna be a fun tournament to watch!
In a match involving two top 10 contenders for the Regional Championship, #5 rated Regional contender Kyle Howard defeated #7 Regional contender Gabe Bailey.
In Junior doubles play, Nick Caldwell and Brady Turner lost to Nathan Perkins and Dalton Adkins.
In a barnburner doubles match, Dickie Williams and Donnie Pack lost to Steve Murphy and Rosendo Romero, “The Madison County Connection,” in the seventh game of a back-and-forth series. Way to play guys!
The doubles team of the year for 2017, Manford Wright and Dewey Moore took on one of the “Dream Team,” Byron Risner and Johnny Johnson, 9-time former Eastern Kentucky Doubles Champions. Risner and Johnson took the series after a staunch effort by Wright and Moore; the top contenders for the Senior Doubles Championship.
Isaiah “The Destroyer” and Matthew Turner won over Nick Caldwell and Mason Ward in doubles action.
The #2 Junior contender Mason Ward edged the #3 Junior Contender Dalton Adkins in a match with Junior Championship implications. Both players will remain at their respective rankings after the match.
Dickie Williams, #4 Senior division contender, and the #1 Regional contender, won over Dewey Moore, # 8 Regional contender, and the #6 Senior contender. Dickie has won two-straight matches, including a non-title match over Regional Champion Manford Moore. Dickie plays a tough-as-nails style with strong spinny serves, and smashes.
In a Senior contender match, #7 Keith Adkins won his second straight match of 2018 as he defeated #10 Steve Murphy. The average win margin was 3 points, showing what a grueling series the two played.
Inter-County Champion Josh Frisby continues a dominant reign as he defeated Isaiah “The Destroyer”, whom place fourth in the Eastern Kentucky Classic, by scores of 7 to 11 (lost), 11 to 6, 11 to 9, and a crazy deuce game win by Frisby 12-10. Isaiah went for a diving play to force a fifth and final game, but it wasn’t to be. Isaiah is still the #1 ranked Inter-County contender.
The #5 Junior contender Nathan Perkins won over Matthew Turner, who made an impressive debut taking one game in the series, and averaging over 7 points in each of the other games. Welcome to EKTT Matthew!
In a Senior division match, #1 contender and former EKTT Senior Singles Champion Langley Franklin defeated #6 Senior contender Donnie Pack. Langley is also the #5 ranked player in all of Eastern Kentucky. A rematch for the Senior Championship with Mitchell O’Neal is a highly anticipated match!
In the match of the night, Regional Champion Manford Wright took on Larry Salyer, and the result was an instant classic! Larry won the first match 11-7, Manford rebounded by winning the second match 16 to 14! The third match again went to deuce with Larry taking it 12-10. In the fourth and final game, Larry took the match by a score of 14-12! Could these two players have given any more effort? They left it all on the table. Larry is the #2 Senior contender, the #3 regional contender, and he’s also the #6 ranked player in all of Eastern Kentucky. This was a non-title match.
“Dr. J” Johnny Johnson made his singles return to EKTT, his first match since 2013, and won over Rosendo Romero, who played a an all-round game mixing up smashes and working the table. “Dr. J” at this time will be competing in the Senior Division. He enters the division ranked at #5.
In the Junior division match of the night, # 7 Nick Caldwell lost to #9 Brady Turner. The match went to the fifth and final game. Brady had to win three straight to take this instant classic, as Nick had taken the first two games. Three of the five games went to deuce! Both these competitive young players gave it all they had!
The #8 Junior contender John Ward defeated #5 Nathan Perkins in an instant classic match that went to the fifth and final game, that John won 11 to 9. John moves up to #5 in the rankings, and Nathan’s rating will be adjusted, but will be no lower than #8 in a stacked Junior division.

EKTT Meet 1: January 4, 2018 /West Liberty, KY/ Morgan County Community Center
EKTT Meet 1 of 2018 Results

The first meet of 2018 featured a new format, which will benefit players wanting to diversify in their play of the Olympic sport known as table tennis.
Our new format will provide a match-up format, which means that players will be paired against other players of similar ability, and the winners will advance toward the goal of playing for an EKTT Championship in the future. Players will also be able to train/practice, play recreationally, participate in doubles, and receive coaching. Players may challenge other players to matches, but it will not count in an official capacity.
So how does a player get a chance to play for a title? The EKTT President (head of the championship committee) and the other two members of the championship committee will come to an agreement as to whom is the top contender for the various titles.
EKTT President Byron Risner had this to say about title matches: “A player has to work his/her way up through the ranks. EKTT will publish monthly rankings of our top players. The current champion in their respective title division is listed at the top, and then the contenders are listed. A player moves through the ranks by playing progressively tougher opponents. The rankings are influenced by a player’s win-loss record, the difficulty of the opponents he/she has beaten, and how convincing his/her victories were, plus of course—their USATT League Rating. Attendance is also a primary factor. It’s hard to get victories and move up the ladder if you aren’t playing.”
The current EKTT titles are: Eastern Kentucky Singles Championship; Inter-County Championship; Regional Championship; Senior Championship (50 +), and Senior Doubles.
In a premier league match, Eastern Kentucky Champion “The Legend” Byron Risner won against Inter-County Champion Josh Frisby in a non-title event, winning the match by scores of: 11-4, 11-7, and 11-5. Risner is now on a 25 match winning streak, and continues his league dominance where he left off 2017 by winning the Eastern Kentucky Classic.
Dickie Williams played Manford Wright, the current Regional Champion, in a non-title match at Meet 1. Dickie put in a strong performance as he won 11-6, 11-6, and 11-4. This big win against the Regional Champion will put Dickie in contention for that title, as well as the Senior Championship, currently held by Mitchell O’Neal.
Isaiah “The Destroyer” Prater has returned to EKTT, and he is ready to win some championships! Isaiah is an 11-time former Inter-County Champion, and a former 13-time Regional Champion. Isaiah won the series, losing the first game 11-9, but winning the last three 11-3, 11-4 and 11-2. In Isaiah’s return, he finished fourth in the Eastern Kentucky Classic. Dalton continues to impress and improve, recently finishing as a finalist for the first Junior Championship tournament. He’s going to be a great one!
Inter-County Champion Josh Frisby and Hall of Famer “The Punisher” Junior Gullett had a battle in premier league play (non-title). Josh won game one 11-6, and Gullett reversed the score on game 2. Frisby took game three 11-9. The Punisher came back to finish strong as he won the last two games 11-2 and 11-8. What a match!
J.C. Stacy made his EKTT debut against all-time West Liberty great Keith Adkins. It was great to have J.C. at the event! Keith won the first two games 11-2, and 11-5. J.C. took the third game in deuce by winning 12-10. Keith won the match, and took the fourth and final game by a score of 11-7.
Charlotte Stacy and Monda Matthews made their EKTT debuts at Meet 1. Charlotte won the first game in deuce 12-10, and she also took game two by a score of 11-2. Monda rebounded and won game three by a score of 11-7. Charlotte won the tough fourth, and final game by a score of 11-8. Congrats to Charlotte on the win, and Monda for putting in a great effort.
What an exciting way to start off 2018! We will be back with Meet 2 on January 11, at the Morgan County Community Center with a 6 pm start time. See you at the tables!
